Jess Sheldon is the owner of Hazel Brown Photography. Hazel Brown was started in 2009 by a close group of friends (all who have either brown or hazel eyes) who have mutual interests in photography and story telling.
When did you start Hazel Brown Photography and where is it based?
I started HBP in 2009 on my parent’s couch while recovering from ACL surgery, and it’s located somewhere between my office in Montgomery and my courtyard in OTR.
What inspires you?
People, Nature, Texture, Clouds, Bicycle adventures, Laughter and of course my dog, Findlay Foxx.
What is your favorite part about Second Sunday on Main?
Watching quiet streets begin to tickle all my senses with laughter, movement, color, fried food.
Fill in the blank: The best part about my city/neighborhood is _________.
OTR’s architecture, the growing entrepreneurial scene, our parks and goetta.
What are your favorite local spots to shop, eat, or visit?
I love Tucker’s on Vine and Mt. Airy trails.
What do you want people to take away from Hazel Brown?
It depends what I’m photographing, but I like people to find the ordinary beautiful and appreciate simplicity. I hope to make them laugh or think, preserve history, document change and capture raw emotion.
What advice would you offer to aspiring indie business owners?
Believe in what you do and be patient. Don’t expect instant success and allow yourself to enjoy the process of having a business and learn from it.
