The Celebrity Chef & Wine pairing event returns Sunday, June 10th with Executive Chef Jose Salazar and Pastry Chef Russ Wheeler of The Palace.
The Celebrity Chef and Wine Pairing event invites Second Sunday visiters to a wine pairing (generously provided by City Cellars) and chef demo by one or more local chefs. Guests are given the recipe for the dishes or drinks when they walk in so they can follow along while the food is prepared. Afterward, a representative from City Cellars will discuss why a particular wine was paired with the dish.
The series of free events has been a part of SSOM since at least 2006. According to Laura Chenault, the head organizer for the Celebrity Chef event, the demos are an opportunity to highlight “people doing good things in the community.” The recruiting process is simple – Chenault approaches restaurants where she loves to eat and asks the chefs if they’d like to participate. Asking a chef to donate his only day off work for a demo where he has to provide his own food and time seems like a hard sell, but Chenault says chefs are enthusiastic to get involved. In fact, many Celebrity Chefs have requested to come back, including Executive Chef Salazar, who is returning this June for his fourth Celebrity Chef event.
Chenault describes the Celebrity Chef event as a “very cool organic experience” because guests can interact with the chefs in a relaxed setting while also enjoying tastings from their favorite restaurants. Since the event runs on a small budget, there are no tables, and the audience eats off paper plates with plastic silverware. Still, while the setup may seem spartan, it makes for a rare opportunity to chat with the chef, ask questions, and learn fun foodie facts about what is being prepared.
